Using Word Webs to Teach Synonyms for Commonly Used Words This process puts everyone in the same boat when it comes to learning new words. ![]() Adult students often feel self-conscious pronouncing new, longer, unfamiliar words. This lesson introduces a wonderfully simple guide to helping students learn and “own” new words. Supporting Vocabulary Instruction with EASE After a mini-lesson on prefixes, students are given cards with prefixes and roots and must find the student holding the card that matches his/her own prefix or root, then write a sentence showing understanding of the new word. ![]() This lesson outlines an activity that is very simple, but will introduce students to the concept of prefixes, suffixes and roots as well as give them practice with word analysis. Vocabulary Lessons You Can’t Spell the Word ‘Prefix’ Without a Prefix The internet has made information available than ever before-the question now becomes, how do we sort through it? And, importantly, how do we help students learn to sort through it? This lesson guides students through the process of scanning for information-a skill that will become more and more important as more information becomes available. Since the ability to summarize effectively is key to reading informational text and to learning in text from general, this would seem to be a promising classroom protocol to try.ĭeveloping Searching, Skimming and Scanning Skills with Internet Bingo Many teachers swear by GIST, a step by step process for helping students write effective summaries. Getting the GIST: a Summarizing Strategy for any Content Area The lesson makes use of a “stop point” technique, whereby the teacher inserts “stop points” into a document at which point students write a question. This lesson plan provides a detailed step-by-step guide that helps you teach students to effectively use the QAR system to improve their own reading. Using QARs to Develop Reading Comprehension and Reflective Reading Habits This lesson guides students to work in groups to write quiz questions for stories they have read, then “administer” the quizzes to other groups of students. The same student then “becomes” a different character and lists traits of the first character from his own, (the second character’s) perspective.Īctive Reading through Self-Assessment: The Student-Made Quiz Students “become” a character in a book or story and list adjectives that would describe him/her. This lesson on the 6-8 grade band sounds extremely promising for helping students both work on vocabulary to describe characters and helping students analyze characters by considering actions, dialogues, and behavior. ![]() ![]() Using the keyboard in Split View gets a bit frustrating if you keep switching between apps, and not every app supports every multitasking mode. By repeating the process with a third app, you can layer it on top of either of the two apps, letting you have a word processor on one side, a calendar on the other, and your messaging app of choice on top of that. You can adjust the real estate each app takes up by sliding the central divider left or right. From there, you can select another app in the dock, long press it, and drag it up either on top of the current app, or next to it, enabling its Split View mode. To start using the iPad’s multitasking feature, open an app or place it in your iPad dock. You can operate up to three apps at a time, and drag and drop items like photos and email attachments between them. The iPad’s Split View feature puts two apps side-by-side, while its Slide Over feature will overlay an iPhone-shaped version of your app on a section of either your home screen or atop the app you’re already using. Whereas window management is a snap on a PC, on an iPad, you’ll be dragging apps, holding them in place, and swiping them to certain parts of the screen to keep your multitasking habits alive. Despite high blood flow and oxygen delivery, oxygen tensions in the kidney are comparatively low, in particular in the renal medulla. The kidney shows a remarkable discrepancy between blood supply and oxygenation 9. Inflammation represents an important additional component of acute kidney injury leading to the extension phase of renal injury 6. An underlying feature of acute kidney injury is a rapid decline in glomerular filtration rate usually associated with decreases in renal blood flow. The carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, nonirritant gas that accounts for numerous cases of carbon monoxide poisoning every year from a variety of sources of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons such as indoor burning of charcoal burning briquettes 8. The throughput averaged 510.9 Mbps at 15 feet, 447.1 Mbps at 50 feet and 371.4 Mbps at 100 feet. The Orbi's performance dropped off with distance, but not as rapidly as the Google Wifi's. But the Orbi adds the latest MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input and multiple output) Wi-Fi technology for sending focused data streams to several devices at the same time. Like Google Wifi, the Orbi is a 2x2 router, and can handle two simultaneous streams of data to properly configured devices, per frequency band. (Orbi units sold in packs come out of the box synchronized.) Each Orbi sports a USB 2.0 port as well, but, like the Bluetooth radios, they're awaiting activation by a future software update. ![]() There are also buttons to reset a device and to synchronize the router with extra satellites. Update: This is no longer the case, and the Orbi RBK50 has had true mesh capability since the firmware was changed in late 2018. The router can handle up to three satellites, but each satellite communicates directly with the host router in a hub-and-spoke arrangement, rather than in a true mesh topology that would let data pass from one satellite to another. You can't randomly decide which unit should be the router and which should be the repeater. There's also a Bluetooth radio and antenna, but they're dormant for now.Īlthough they look the same, the Orbi's router unit and satellite units are not interchangeable. To support this configuration, each Orbi device has six high-performance amplified antennas around its perimeter. Because of this side channel, the main links between the Orbi units and your devices stay strong and fast. There's a twist, though: Netgear adds a second 5-GHz, 1.7Gbps radio that's exclusively dedicated to the backhaul, the data being transmitted from the router Orbi unit to the satellite Orbis and back again. The primary 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz radios provide a theoretical peak throughput of 1.2Gbps of data flow to user devices. ![]() The Orbi transmits Wi-Fi data on three radio-frequency bands. The pen’s pressure levels and the speed at which it can draw are also a bit too basic to do any serious work. “These are all finicky, nitpicky things,” he says, “but they all add up to the fact that this isn’t a very powerful tool.” There’s no painting tool, for instance, and erasing is an all-or-nothing deal, so you can’t smudge something like you might on a real canvas. He called Sketch - the app meant for drawing - “more of a novelty than a tool.” And as for the entire package? “With Adobe behind it,” he says, “I would have expected it to be more powerful.”Ĭady-Lee found that the tools do a good job of reproducing their real-world counterparts, but he says that the number of tools and the options present for each of them are too limited. His results are really impressive, but Cady-Lee isn’t taken with the tools or apps. In particular, they got illustrator Devon Candy-Lee to give the tools a go and his input really gives the review a great touch, revealing the limitations of the product and software. It does so with a wide array of guides (called Trace Packs and Stamp Packs) that you can enlarge, resize, and twist on your canvas. At its heart, the app is designed to help you easily draft and draw shapes, lines, and other geometrical objects. While Sketch is a solid program in its own right, Line is an outright masterwork from Adobe: an easy-to-use app with incredible power behind it. So long as they’re driving more subscriptions, Adobe benefits regardless.Īdobe launched three new, free, mobile apps for the iPad Adobe Line for precision drawing and drafting, Adobe Sketch for free-form drawing (with interesting community features), Photoshop Mix which has been designed to do precise compositing and masking.
